Allen sits on the Blackland Prairie. Houston Black, the Texas state soil, is expansive. It swells when wet and shrinks when dry, which heaves edging, cracks hardscape built without a proper base, and drowns plants set at grade. We specify raised beds, compacted select fill under hardscape and species that tolerate clay, and we design the drainage before we design the planting.
Allen (an NTMWD member city) assigns two watering days per week, even addresses Monday and Thursday and odd addresses Tuesday and Friday, with no sprinkler irrigation from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. April through October and one winter watering day. We design drought-tolerant structure plantings and drip irrigation in the beds so the yard looks finished on that schedule.
Most premium Allen lots run about a fifth to a third of an acre, and Estates of Twin Creeks stretches toward an acre. At that size every square foot is in view, so we design the whole lot as one composition, with the sight lines from the kitchen and the screening from neighbors worked out first and turf only where you will use it.
Allen's Land Development Code includes tree preservation provisions (§7.06). Before any removal is drawn into a plan we confirm current requirements with the city's Community Development department, so the design never depends on a tree you can't legally take out.

Plants that tolerate expansive Houston Black clay and Zone 8a heat: think native and adapted species with strong root systems, planted high in amended, well-drained beds. Preparation matters more than the plant list here. Bed height, drainage and soil work decide whether an Allen landscape lasts.
